The Vikings were a Northern European people of Germanic origin who lived in the area that is today Scandinavia. Raiders and traders, with their highly developed seafaring skills, were able to navigate all the seas and major rivers of Western Europe, greatly influencing the destinies of several nations, such as Great Britain and France, during what became known as “The Viking Era”.

Some historians consider that this era started in 793, with the raid on the Lindisfarne Abbey in Northumberland. The event sent shockwaves through Christendom and is recorded in many contemporary chronicles that offer a really dark testimony:

“Never before has such terror appeared in Britain as we have now suffered from a pagan race … The heathens poured out the blood of saints around the altar, and trampled on the bodies of saints in the temple of God, like dung in the streets.” wrote Alcuin of York about the event. He was a scholar in the court of Emperor Charlemagne

Our miniature portrays a Viking chief after the raid, getting ready to inspect some loot.
