From 1996, they were divided into two species: the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bornean_orangutan\" title=\"Bornean orangutan\"\u003eBornean orangutan\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e(\u003ci\u003eP. pygmaeus\u003c\/i\u003e, with three subspecies) and the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sumatran_orangutan\" title=\"Sumatran orangutan\"\u003eSumatran orangutan\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e(\u003ci\u003eP. abelii\u003c\/i\u003e). In November 2017 it was reported that a third species had been identified, the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tapanuli_orangutan\" title=\"Tapanuli orangutan\"\u003eTapanuli orangutan\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e(\u003ci\u003eP. tapanuliensis\u003c\/i\u003e).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGenomic comparisons show that the Tapanuli orangutan separated from the Sumatran orangutan about 3.4 million years ago. The Tapanuli orangutan separated from the Bornean orangutan much later, about 670,000 years ago. The orangutans are the only surviving species of the subfamily\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ponginae\" title=\"Ponginae\"\u003ePonginae\u003c\/a\u003e, which also included several other species, such as the three extinct species of the genus\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gigantopithecus\" title=\"Gigantopithecus\"\u003eGigantopithecus\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e, including the largest known primate,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eGigantopithecus blacki\u003c\/i\u003e. The ancestors of the Ponginae split from the main ape line in Africa 16 to 19 million years ago (\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mya_(unit)\" title=\"Mya (unit)\" class=\"mw-redirect\"\u003eMya\u003c\/a\u003e) and spread into Asia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOrangutans are the most\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arboreal_locomotion\" title=\"Arboreal locomotion\"\u003earboreal\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eof the great apes and spend most of their time in trees. Their hair is reddish-brown, instead of the brown or black hair typical of\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pan_(genus)\" title=\"Pan (genus)\"\u003echimpanzees\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gorilla\" title=\"Gorilla\"\u003egorillas\u003c\/a\u003e. Males and females differ in size and appearance. Dominant adult males have distinctive cheek pads and produce long calls that attract females and intimidate rivals. Younger males do not have these characteristics and resemble adult females. Orangutans are the most solitary of the great apes, with social bonds occurring primarily between mothers and their dependent offspring, who stay together for the first two years. Fruit is the most important component of an orangutan’s diet; however, the apes will also eat vegetation, bark, honey, insects and even bird eggs. The apes have been extensively studied for their learning abilities. There may even be distinctive cultures within populations. Field studies of the apes were pioneered by\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Primatology\" title=\"Primatology\"\u003eprimatologist\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Birut%C4%97_Galdikas\" title=\"Birutė Galdikas\"\u003eBirutė Galdikas\u003c\/a\u003e. Human activities have caused severe declines in populations and ranges.
